Xcom Global Review
As the world becomes more and more connected, having easy and reliable access to the internet is becoming more and more important. This of course, is obvious for travel bloggers. We need the internet to update our followers on facebook and twitter, and to upload photos and publish content to our websites. However, it is just as important for the average traveller as well. Researching and booking hostels, looking up attractions on google or Wikipedia, and accessing online maps are imperative for any traveller – not to mention the need to keep in touch with friends and family over social media and Skype.
Let’s face it. Everyone needs the internet.
But having reliable and easy access to the internet can often be difficult while travelling.
Sometimes you can get wifi in cafe’s, but in some countries, like New Zealand or Australia, this service is uncommon. Some hostels offer free wifi, but many don’t. And very, very few hotels offer wifi at anything other than a cripplingly expensive rate.

Xom Global Mobile Internet
This is where mobile internet enters the picture. Imagine being able to carry about your own pocket wifi device or dongle stick which accesses the local 3 or 4G network? How convenient would that be?
And this is where mobile internet enters the picture. Some countries have telecom providers which offer mobile internet devices and plans to suit a variety of needs. Want a dongle to plug into your laptop… they have that. Need a device that is portable and can connect to several devices at once – they have that as well. But the problem can be the cost. Many of these providers are not set up on a “pay as you go” model. If you are not signing up for a 2 – 3 year contract, the device itself can cost you several hundred dollars, and then you will still have to pay for your monthly data usage.
And the cost of data usage can be astronomical. On average, 100 mb can cost you around 25 dollars for the month. This might be enough for you if you only need the internet to book tours and accommodation and check your emails, but as soon as you want to start uploading photos or video from your trip you will be in trouble. 5gb of data, enough for those who want to share their photos online can easily cost between 60 – 100 dollars per month. Yikes! Add this to the cost of the initial device, and internet access can quickly exceed a travellers budget – especially if the trip is shorter term, such as a few weeks or a month.
Benefits of Xcom Global Mobile Internet
Rent the device for how long you need it – With the Xcom Global Mobile Internet system you are able to rent the device type that you need, for the period of time that you need. This means you can avoid paying anywhere from 200 – 400 dollars to buy the device from a local provider.
Unlimited Internet – Unlike local provider plans which may offer “pay as you go” options, the Xcom mobile internet service offers unlimited internet access for the flat fee of $14.95 per day. This means you don’t need to worry about uploading photos, downloading podcasts, or uploading video for your friends, family, to see back home. If you are a business traveller, this is especially useful as you may need to access online video or other resources for presentations, etc, and could end up paying a fortune for “pay as you go” data.
Use the device in more than just one country – Xcom provides service in dozens countries, and when you change country all you need to do is change the sim card in the device. This means that if you are travelling to several countries that you don’t need to buy a new device in each location. Imagine having to pay several hundred dollars to buy a new dongle every week or two on a European backpacking trip – that would eat up a lot of the beer fund!
Use the device in countries which may not offer a comparable local service – Xcom also provides service in countries which may not have their own comparable local service. Travelling to Turkmenistan and don’t want to negotiate a pre paid mobile internet plan with a local shop – well you can avoid that all by using Xcom.
Access the internet anywhere – The Xcom mobile internet device can be used anywhere where there is mobile coverage, unlike similar hotspot devices which can only be used in certain locations that have an agreement with the hotspot.
Long battery life – The device has a battery life of about 4 hours, and the package came with two batteries. By keeping them both charged up, it means I have 8 hours of internet access without being near an electrical outlet. You can also use the device when it is plugged into the wall, but you need to remove the battery first.
Drawbacks of Xcom Mobile Internet
Coverage depends on local availability – The Xcom device relies on the local telecom network, and it is not a satellite service. This means that in places where there is no cell phone coverage, there is also no Xcom coverage. This will vary by country.
Device is better for shorter term travel, or multi country travel – The Xcom mobile internet device is most cost effective for shorter term trips (less than one month) or trips which visit several different countries. If you will be staying in one country for longer than a month, it may be more cost effective to use the local service and “pay as you go.” Of course make sure you do your research before you arrive, as some countries may not offer “pay as you go” plans or may not offer mobile internet full stop.
