I have lived in Melbourne for the last year and I have absolutely fallen in love with this city. But whats more, not only is the city an absolutely fantastic place to live, but the countryside offers just as much for those who explore as the city does.
We have been very lucky to be able to explore quite a bit of the Victorian countryside before our move to Sydney. Our last weekend trip before the big move was do the beautiful and peaceful shire of Murrindindi.
Murrindindi is often overlooked by travellers in regional Victoria, despite being only about an hour and a half from the city and boasting some incredible national parks, lakes and natural areas. A weekend in Murrindindi is a true weekend in the countryside, offering a refreshing change from city life.
What to do in Murrindindi
Cathedral Range State Park – This 3,500 hectare state park lies in between the towns of Taggerty and Buxton and offers some suburb hiking. Popular features of the park are the peaks of the Cathedral range and the rolling hills of Blue Range. There is a wide range of hiking trails in the area, ranging from short and easy to longer and more difficult.
Lake Mountain – This Alpine Resort is near the town of Marysville is where a lot of Melbournians come for their first glimpse of snow. It’s more of a cross country ski resort than downhill, and offers plenty of snowy activities for both young and old. It does cost for entry to the park, so plan to spend at least a full day to make it worthwhile.
Lake Eildon – This lake and national park offers camping, hiking, fishing and water sport activities.
Wineries – While the area around nearby Healesville is better known for it’s high density of wineries, the cool climate in Murrindindi allows for a couple vineyards of note. A couple worth mention are Sedona estate and Rees Miller Estate.
Steavenson Falls – Some of the most accessible and well known falls in the area. Steavenson Falls are located near the town of Marysville and have wheelchair accessible paths up to a viewing platform. The falls are lit up at night.
Keppel Falls – These were Dan’s favourite falls in the area. The walk to the falls from the car park is about 2 km’s return and is a short drive away from Marysville. There are some steps involved, but the hike to the falls is generally quite easy.
Yea Wetlands – The Yea wetlands, near the town of Yea, is a great place for artists, nature lovers and bird watchers. There are several short walks across bridges and boardwalks at the wetlands, and koalas and even platypus can be spotted here.
Where to stay in Murrindini
Set on the banks of the Acheron river, our cabins porch looked towards the peaceful river. Located a short drive from the town of Taggerty and Alexandra, and nestled on the foothills of Cathedral Ranges State Park is a fantastic budget accommodation options for all types of travellers.
We stayed at the Big 4 Holiday Park in Taggerty which offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit any budget and travel style. Powered and un-powered sites are available, as well as six different styles of cabin. No matter what level of comfort you desire, or how many people you need to accommodate, there is an option at Big 4 Taggerty that will suit your needs and allow you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region.
Since it was still winter, and a bit chilly during our visit, we stayed in the Riverfront cabin. This cabin sleeps up to 6 and has two bedrooms. It’s fully self contained, with a kitchen, large sitting room, and bathroom. After a day of hiking we could come back to our warm cabin, drink wine while looking out over the little river and even cook our own meal if we felt so inclined.
One thing I love about Big 4 Holiday Parks is all the wonderful activities and facilities they have for children, and the Taggery park was no exception. Big 4 Taggerty has an outdoor pool, a playground, a jumping pillow, and plenty of campfire areas to keep the little ones busy and entertained. And for those not staying in a self contained cabin, there is also a camp kitchen and an amenities block.
