The Maldives, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, is comprised of nearly 1,200 different islands. These days, some of the more far flung and remote islands are connected by sea plane, but for a real Maldivian experience you need to take at least one ferry on a Dhoni (a traditional Maldivian boat).
We spent most of our Maldives holiday on the small island of Keyodhoo, which was about 5.5 hours from the capital of Male by ferry. While we were waiting for the ferry to depart, we stayed on the small island of Vilingili, which is a sort of quiet island suburb of the bustling capital. From the nearby ferry terminal we watched the dhonis journey back and forth, back and forth from the capital. A boat connects Male and Viligili approximately every 10 minutes.
We spent about two hours snapping photos in order to create this time lapse and hope it gives you a sense of what it is to be in a place where the main mode of transportation is boat.
