So far, Africa remains relatively unexplored for me. Sure, I have been to Morocco, but that’s it. The only continent less explored than Africa for me is South America, but I will be rectifying that very shortly.
There are so many places on my African bucket list. However, some will need to wait until the children are a little older because I want them to be able to remember all of our adventures, especially when we check these entries off our list:
Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
I try to keep my bucket list stuff achievable. Mount Everest will never be featured on one of my bucket lists, even Everest base camp is probably a little out of range. But climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is one of those epic experiences that I feel is within my reach. Sure, I would probably need to up my fitness game, but this is one mountain I reckon I could conquer with enough preparation.
An African safari is what most often come to mind when people think of an African getaway. It surely is the highlight of almost everyone’s African bucket lists for a number of reasons–from witnessing the beauty of Africa’s natural parks and game reserves to catching a glimpse of different wild animals in their natural habitat.
Planning a great African safari with the kids will eat weeks or even months of your schedule. Luckily, there are great safari adventures available in the market such as the Family Safari packages by Bench Africa. They even have Africa travel specialists that will help tailor your itinerary according to how you and the children would love it.
Do you like to move it, move it? I do! That’s why experiencing everything Madagascar has to offer is one of the things on my bucket list, especially seeing lemurs in their natural habitat!
Get Lost in the Namibian Desert
Growing up in the Canadian prairies has given me an affinity for wide open spaces. Places like the steppes of Mongolia and the desert of Namibia strike me with their particular form of isolation and beauty.
Hike the Atlas Mountains
Morocco is the one place in Africa that I have already been to, but that trip was fairly short and really just a “taster” tour of this incredible country. I would love to go back and spend quite a bit more time there, and as part of that trip, I would love to spend some time hiking in the Atlas Mountains. Last time I was in Morocco, I visited the desert and went on a camel safari – which was incredible. So next time, I’m gonna ditch the desert for the mountains.
Eat in Ethiopia
If you ask me what my favorite cuisine is, I will tell you, without a moment’s hesitation, that it is Ethiopian food. Whenever I am spending time in a new city, I always do my research to see if there is a local Ethiopian restaurant. I love the flavours as well as the communal nature of the meals. And of course, you can’t forget the coffee.
I would love to spend some time in Ethiopia and learn how to cook the cuisine in the land of its origin.
Relax in Mauritius
I couldn’t end this bucket list without at least one beach and relaxing destination. Mauritius is on my bucket list not only for its lovely palm fringed beaches, but also for its rare wildlife and superb trekking opportunities.
These are just some of the places in Africa I would love to visit with my family. I actually have a long list, but these would definitely be the first ones we’ll go to! What’s yours? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
