Australia can feel like its a million miles away from anywhere. This continent/ country doesn’t easily lend itself to quick international trips away, as you need to fly across an ocean to get anywhere else. But despite that, there are loads of great international trips available to Australians and which are only a few hours away on a plane.
Auckland, New Zealand
Just a couple hours away is New Zealand’s largest city. With a beautiful harbour, diverse islands, a selection of black or white sand beaches, and a good heap of food and culture, Auckland makes for a great city break. We are actually going to Auckland in a couple of weeks, and I’m super excited, as Auckland was the first city in the Southern Hemisphere that I visited when I first arrived almost 6 years ago!
Fiji is probably the most accessible Pacific Island for Australians looking for a short break. With many beautiful islands, Fiji has something for any taste and budget. And with many resorts and travel agencies offering good deals on flights + accommodation packages, it’s hard to say no. For those with more time, Fiji is also a good central choice if you want to jump around some of the other different Pacific Islands as well.
Norfolk Island is sort of part of Australia, but you require a passport to fly there so it makes the list. Norfolk island is blessed with stunning beaches and bush land. It’s also home to several UNESCO world heritage sites due to it’s historical significance in Australia’s convict past. I haven’t been to Norfolk Island yet, but it is high on my list.
Bali has long been an Australian favourite. In fact, its just a mainstay of Australian vacations that many Australians say they don’t want to go there because there are just too many other Australians! But despite overwhelming presence of other travellers, Bali still has some pretty incredible beaches as well as being home to a very unique culture. And with the strong Australian dollar, even average Australian families can splurge a bit on a nice hotel in Bali.
Singapore is only a couple hours away depending on where you live in Australia, but when you arrive you will feel like you are in an entirely different world… or the future… your pick. Singapore is a one stop destination for world class everything – from gourmet restaurants, to amazing cheap street eats. From designer boutiques, to local craftsmen. This little island city is super easy to get around, and there are plenty of accommodation options for any budget. And best of all, since Singapore is a major flight hub, its super easy to go from here to pretty much anywhere in the world.
