Last year, as 2013 was coming to a close, we were in the middle of a five month trip through New Caledonia, Canada and Europe with a baby under the age of one. It was pretty epic. So we were pretty realistic about one thing. And that was that we would have very little money when we finally ended that trip.
When 2013 finally ended, we were actually in Kosovo. Dan went out with other people from our hostel to light fireworks that looked like grenades, like the entire rest of the population in Kosovo. I stayed back with little Jacob, who was about 10 months old at the time and miraculously managed to sleep through all the pops and bangs going on outside.
After a few days in Kosovo we moved on to Macedonia and Bulgaria and finally back to the United Kingdom to finish our backpacking with a baby adventure.
So we knew that when we returned to Australia, I would probably have to go back to work for a while. We didn’t plan for too much travel, but we did have a few goals.
So what were our 2014 goals?
Goal number 1: Pacific Islands
Our first goal was to visit at least two more Pacific Islands. Did we achieve it? Well…ummm… no. But we really did think about it! We were about to go on a week long trip to Norfolk Island when I unexpectedly landed a job soon after getting back to Australia. So that was off the cards. We also looked into visiting the Cook Islands, but it just worked out to much too expensive in air far when compared to some other destination options.
But – we did go to the Maldives. Which are not a Pacific Island, but they are pretty similar. I mean, they have sun, sand, snorkelling and diving and are generally a fantastic beach destination. Expect they are in the Indian ocean and not the Pacific ocean…. but close enough right? I mean, its the freaking Maldives!
You can find out full guide to the Maldives here with links to all our other Maldivian resources.
Goal number 2: Asia
This one we totally nailed!!! Dan and Jacob head off to Vietnam with some other family members in August. I didn’t go as I had been before, and one of us has to work right! But I did get to join them both for a trip to Indonesia and Singapore which happened in November. Oh, and we also had a day long stop over in Malaysia while en route to the Maldives. I have been to KL before, but it was a first for Dan and Jacob.
We are still writing about our time in Vietnam and you will find the rest of our posts in the new year. One post not to miss is our Halong Bay photo essay, so make sure to check that out!
What else did we achieve?
We have been lucky enough to do a lot of really great local travel in Australia. Our highlights of travel in Australia this year has been my trip with Tourism Queensland to the Sapphire Gem fields where I fossicked for sapphires and eventually settled for this one which I fossicked from a jewellery store (a slightly less hot and dusty process.)
Other highlights included our Gippsland and Central Victoria Road Trips which we did in conjunction with Choice Hotels. Both were really excellent experiences and we are keen to revisit all the destinations in the near future.
How did you do? Did you achieve your 2014 travel goals?
