It’s actually a little bit difficult for me to write a 2018 goals post since most of our 2018 travel is already mapped out. But I guess even the best of laid plans can change…
We are currently about 6 weeks in to a 5.5 month trip through South America. We started by flying into Buenos Aries, before quickly jumping over to Montevideo, Uruguay, and then back to Argentina. So far we have explored Buenos Aries, Mendoza, Bariloche, El Chalten and El Calafate. We then hopped over to Chile and have visited Puerto Natales, Pucon, Santiago, and we are about to head to Easter Island. Now the plan is to continue heading north until we hit Colombia…. but there may still be a few road blocks and change of plans….
Goal 1: Complete Plan A
We have a plan. I mapped it out ages ago. The plan was to start to Buenos Aries, work our way down through Argentinian Patagonia, then cross into Chilean Patagonia before making our way up the west coast of South America until we hit the Colombian Caribbean. The trip would take us through six countries (Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia). But there is one potential road block and that is Mr. Z.
Peru, Ecuador and Colombia are all yellow fever zones. Now, we will not be in yellow fever areas (and if we are, it will be briefly), so I’m not overly worried about the disease. However, vaccinations are recommended for all countries, and Ecuador requires you to show your yellow fever certificate if you are entering from another yellow fever country. Now this is not a problem for Simon and Jake as they have been vaccinated, but I have not been able to be vaccinated. When we first decided to do this trip about a year ago, I was pregnant with Mr. Z. And now that he is here, I am breastfeeding which means there is a risk I will pass the disease to Mr. Z through my milk.
The plan was to wean Mr. Z around now but despite all our best efforts, that is not happening. Mr. Z will not tolerate it. He will drink breastmilk just fine out of the bottle, but one taste of formula and he wails his head off. It’s been such a stressful time up until this point that I have decided to toss the weaning idea all together. It just will not work.
According to my research, you do not need a yellow fever certificate to enter Peru, Colombia, or Argentina (where we fly home from), so the only issue is Ecuador. From what I have read, a medical exemption may be enough to get me across and also that most people do not even get checked. So the plan is to try to get a medical exemption letter while in Chile (or Peru) and try our luck at the border. If that doesn’t work well… I guess we skip Ecuador, fly to Colombia, and then spend some extra time there and in Argentina.
Goal 2: A Couple Epic Birthdays
After our 5.5 months in South America, we will all return to Australia briefly for about 2 weeks before then heading out on trip part 2 – this time to Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. It just so happens that my birthday will be when we are in Hawaii, and Simons will be when we are on our cruise from Alaska to Vancouver. Also by then Mr. Z should definitely be weaned (fingers crossed), so if all goes to plan I may even get a sneaky glass of wine or two!
Goal 3: Zachs First Camping Trip
When we get back to Australia in July it will be time to stay still for a little bit. We are doing distance education with Jacob while we are away, but he is enrolled to start regular school for term 3 and 4. Also, I will probably (hopefully) we ready to settle down and go back to work (for a little while). That means it will only be weekend trips for us for a while. But that’s OK. We love camping, and there are so many beautiful places around NSW to check out. Plus it will definitely be time for Mr. Z to have his first camping trip.
