I see big things happening in 2017. I’m just not sure what they are yet.
For the first time in my working career, I have positive figures of annual leave, and no holidays currently booked. This has never happened before.
So what should I do with my leave (currently 9 days and counting!).
A quick holiday to somewhere in Asia is quite easy when you are based in Australia. The problem lies in that I have been to much of the part of Asia which is direct flight-able from Australia and I have an aversion to revisiting most places. The places in Asia that I have been putting off are all the ones which I think require more than a quick break – ie: 2 weeks or more. I still have not visited Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, Japan, China or Korea – but I feel like these places deserve more time to properly explore them.
I have already been to Indonesia, but only to the island of Java. One place to could easily do in a week or even slightly less in Bali. I am planning to get my Australian citizenship this year – what better way to celebrate than to join every other Australian in Bali?
Readers of this blog will know that Pacific Islands have a very special place in my heart. I have been to quite a few, but there are still more waiting to be explored. The only issue with the islands is that I have visited most of the ones that are fairly straight forward to get to. The islands now left on my list require transiting in New Zealand or Fiji, which dramatically extends travel time.
One island group which I am considering for my next adventure is Hawaii. There are plenty of cheap and direct flight to Hawaii from Sydney and loads of great and affordable Hawaii vacation rentals. It would be an easy destination to travel to with children, and I could combine my love of Pacific food and culture with my love of purchasing cheap American products all in one holiday. Perfect.
Something further afield?
Hawaii and Bali are all pretty safe and standard destinations, and we all know I am not afraid to go outside of that comfort zone. So why not something a little further afield? I’m thinking of places like Mauritius or Ethiopia. Both are options for next year.
Jacob starts kindergarten in February 2018, so 2017 may be my last chance in a while to go on an extended backpacking trip with him. So something epic is definitely on the cards. I would love to do at least three months of exploring the world with my favourite little guy, which will probably be in the second half of the year. Itinerary? Who knows.
So whats on for 2017? Well for sure there will be something epic. And for sure there will be at least one smaller (1 – 2 week) trip in there somewhere.
So, what do you think I should do?
