There is loads of do and explore in central Java, Indonesians most populated island. You won’t need too much help filling your time in Indonesia. The challenging part of travel in Java, is doing it when you only have a limited amount of time.
Our itinerary will show you how to see the highlights of central Java all within the space of one week.
One week in central Java
The best way to arrive into central Java is to fly into Yogyakarta. The main highlight of central Java is the temple of Borobudor. You can join a tour which leaves from Yogyakarta, but the absolute best way to visit this temple is with the sunrise tour. In order to do that you really need to spend the night in the town of Borobudor. The town is small, but there is still a decent variety of hotels, and most of these hotels will pick you up from the airport.
Join the Borobudor sunset tour. Enjoy the serenity before the crowds take over. Since you have started early, you will probably finish early as well, meaning you will still make it back to your hotel to check out. Either take the bus, or organize a transfer with your hotel back to Yogyakarta.
Enjoy a sleep in after your early morning the day before. Spend the day wandering around the kraton of Jogyakarta and checking out batik hawkers on Malioboro. In the evening join a sunset tour to the temples of Prambanan. You can even stay into the night to watch the Ramayana ballet for an extra dose of culture.
Yesterday was a big day full of culture, so you will need some time to unwind. Either rent your own motorbike, hire a driver, or join a tour to the beaches of central Java. We joined a tour and visited three fairly empty and beautiful stretches of sand.
Escape the heat of the city and tour into the mountainous region around Solo. We joined a tour which took us to the historic kraton of Solo, the fertility temple of Candi Sukah, and the impressive 100m high Tawangmangu waterfall.
It’s been a busy few days. Did you discover anything else along the way that peaked your interest? Is there anything you want to revisit? This is your day to find some hidden gems, relax by the pool, or do some last minute shopping before heading home.
One week in central Java
One week in central Java will take you to all the main sights and attractions. If you have more time why not explore the areas a little further afield from Yogya… head on some hikes, or explore more hidden temples. The world is your oyster.
