Delicious, delicious food. Thats one of things I love about going back to Canada. Canada is proud of its multicultural heritage, and it reflects this pride in its cuisine. The following list is some of my favourite Canadian comfort food and are definite must tries next time you visit the True North.
Poutine is a traditional comfort food from Quebec which has been enthusiastically adopted as one of Canada’s favourite fast foods. So what is Poutine? Its essentially french fries mixed with gravy and most importantly, cheese curds. You can find it at most “greasy spoon” restaurants, pubs, and many fast food outlets. Most recently a poutine chain “Smokes” has become hugely popular across Canada with dozens of different poutine combinations… like poutine with onionrings, and Mexican poutine. Poutine is now Daniels favourite new food.
If you are anywhere near the Pacific coast you will be amazed at the high quality Salmon that is available. The best place to get Salmon is in British Columbia where it is freshest, but fantastic smoked Salmon is available all across the country. The salmon filets you can get in Canada will blow your mind with their size. We were told by the naturalist on our Whale Watching Tour that its a more ethical choice to buy wild salmon instead of farmed salmon.
Perogies are the staple of the Prairie provinces – my hometown. This is my comfort food. Perogies are small potatoe filled dumplings that came to Canada with immigrants from various Eastern European countries. The Prairie provinces have a large Polish and Ukranian population making these potatoe and cheese dumplings one of the most common things served at family dinners. They are also a staple for Canadian university students as a pack of 12 frozen perogies can be bought at the supermarket for as low as $1.
Bison used to roam the Canadian prairies in the millions. Sadly, their numbers are much, much lower now. You won’t see a buffalo in the wild, but you can still see them in special nature preserves, and of course, on farms. Where they are farmed for their delicious, delicious (and healthy) meat. Buffalo burgers are delicious and much lower fat than traditional beef burgers.
