Wellington is a great place for public art. The most well known in the city is the famous “Buckets Fountain” on Cuba St. One of my favourites is this sculpture by Phil Price. It is called Protoplasm, but is better known as “the Pebbles”. The sculpture is unique in the fact that it utilizes Wellingtons notoriously high winds. When it is windy (and it often is!) the scultpure comes alive. Each one of the “pebbles” spins on a different axis.
The artist has likened it to the chaos of cellular interaction. It is just that. Very chaotic, and also completely mesmerizing.
It was installed in 2002 and is located on the Corner of Lambton Quay and Hunter St. If you are in Wellington and it starts to get windy I would recommend checking it out.
