Fancy a spot of shopping on your travels this year? Forget Milan, forget Paris and forget New York; whether you’re looking for a wedding dress or just to window shop, London is the only destination on the cards.
Not sure where to start? That’s where this article comes in. See below for everything you need to know about shopping in the UK’s buzzing capital. From quirky market stalls to quintessentially British boutiques, we’ve got it covered.
High Street Heroes
The British high street is undoubtedly the most stylish in Europe. From budget-friendly, on-trend brand Primark to chic, upmarket high street labels such as Whistles and Reiss favoured by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, the Brits really have got it all.
Where to go? If it’s your first trip to London then, although extremely busy, a visit to Oxford Street – the home of world-famous department store Selfridges and the flagship store of edgy English fashion brand, Topshop – really is a must. Plus, with the home of vintage Carnaby Street just around the corner, you can escape when the crowds get too much to handle.
Something a little different
For a shopping centre experience like no other, visit Westfield. The bright, spacious interior, high ceilings and amazing variety of retailers and restaurants all add to an enjoyable day’s shopping.
Been there, done that? Try Covent Garden. Not only will you find all your high street favourites but you can take in the great atmosphere, and have a look at the famous open air market too, which brings us nicely on to….
Camden Market is home to more than 100 shops and stalls. You’ll find everything from alternative and vintage clothing, jewellery and accessories to arts and crafts here. Camden really has its own distinctive flavour and it’s a great place to visit for a taste of the ‘real’ London.
Brick Lane Market is just as good for amazingly affordable leather goods as it is for exotic spices and colourful saris. Old Spitalfields in Shoreditch is by far the coolest place to head to for food, artwork and fashion. After an antique? Then head to Portobello Road Market on Saturdays for hidden gems galore.
There’s really too many to choose from!
Doing it like a local
Whatever type of shopping experience you go for in London, do it like a local. Try to stay away from touristy looking shops, which are sure to feature a huge mark up, and explore back streets for unexpected finds!
