- Couchsurfing is a great website to meet local and foreigners alike, learn about their culture, and perhaps even stay with them for a night or two. Keep in mind though, it is not simply a “free place to stay” and some sort of cultural exchange is desired…. also… it is not a dating website!
- Matodor Travel is a travel website full of great articles, blogs, reviews, and even runs online courses for aspiring travel writers and photographers.
- Gecko Go is a fantastic website that calculates your travel credit based on your travel experience, but best of all it has a wealth of information regarding travel destinations which is entirely user submitted. Gecko go will recommend destinations and sites based on your previous experiences and has great user forums where you can ask and answer your travel questions. Partners with Bradt Travel Guide.
Guide books and reference
- Traveling on a shoestring? Then Lonely Planet probably has the guide book for you. With guide books for pretty much every destination you can dream up, as well as other great activity specific guides (such as trekking or photography) as well as a wonderful range of general books (such as a year of festivals or the best of travel writing). Guide book chapters as also available for download as a pdf and lets not forget the great Thorn Tree forums.
- Another great travel guide book is Rough Guides. These are great if you want more in depth information regarding each destination, but are willing to give up details on cheap hotels/ eateries/ etc.
- Interested in the offbeat? Off the beaten track? Or the just plain eccentric? Then perhaps you should pick up a Bradt Travel Guide.
Travel Logistics
- Skyscanner is a great website which allows you to search and compare airfares across a wide variety of carriers.
- Airfarewatchdog is a fantastic resource if you know you want to go somewhere, but not sure where. The site allows you to compare airfares to your destination, or to just input your departure city and compare fares to many possible destinations.
- Want to jet set around Europe and not to bothered with comfort? Then Ryan Air has just the fare for you. Don’t expect much more than low prices.
