There is a lot to explore in the rain forest. But no matter how long you spend hiking and wandering in the rain forest, you will be limited to only discovering the life that lives on the forest floor. If you want to discover an entire different world; the world of birds, then you need to make your way to the canopy.
The Rainforest Discovery Centre, located nearby the world famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, has been open to the public since 2007. The centre was originally established as an environmental educations resource for teachers and students, but now it also seeks to share it’s vision with foreign tourists as well.
Located near the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilition Centre as well as near several guest houses and hotels in Sepilok, the Rainforest Discovery Centre is one of the easiest and most accessible places to learn about and experience the Bornean forest. Here you can explore the rainforest both from the ground along a myriad of paths and trails, keeping your eyes open for local creatures like the Greater Mouse Deer. Or journey up into the canopy, which is 25 meters high into the air at it’s tallest point. The canopy walkway is about 350 meters long, and it’s a good place to spot local birdlife, especially when you visit in the morning. This was actually the first place that we spotted a hornbill in the wild!
One of our absolute favourite Bornean jungle moments was hiking through the jungle in the evening. As soon as the sun goes down, a whole new world emerges and you can spot some of Borneos most unique and interesting creatures. We did our evening jungle walk in Bilit, but if you don’t have time to spend a day or two in Bilit, you don’t need to miss out. You can book a night walk tour at the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Tours don’t run every day, and spots are limited, so plan ahead and book in advance.
