Sometimes when you travel you lose weight (ahem…food poisoning…. Asia… I’m looking at you) and other times you gain…and gain..and gain.
Our trip through North America and Europe has been of the later type. For several months after his surgery Dan could not eat at all. He was fed through a tube in his stomach and was very, very eager to eat food again. He used to rub things on his tongue just to experience taste. So you can imagine, once he started eating again it was all systems go.
In Canada we gorged ourselves on perogies and poutine. Fries smothered in curd cheese and gravy? Yes please! In the UK it was all about fish and chips and bangers and mash, not exactly low fat options. And now in Belgium….. well… you can’t get a bad meal in Belgium. And it is also the home of french fries, waffles, chocolate and beer.
I’ve stopped buying new clothes because I am expanding at too quick of a rate to get much use from them. I’ve gained a number of kilos which will remain undisclosed, thank you very much.
When we get back to Australia, things will have to change.
So I started thinking, what are some things people can do to stay fit on the road? I mean, I guess it depends on what type of travel you are doing. When I spent a couple months in New Zealand hiking all the time, I didn’t really have a problem with staying fit. But city tripping (cities filled with amazing food) is a different story.
There is loads that you can do to stay fit. You can get up for morning runs, or find a local pool. But let me share a secret with you. I am lazy. Instead of running in the morning, you can usually find me eating sugar cereal instead.
The only time I can get myself motivated to exercise is when I join a gym. Once I force myself to actually go there, then I usually have no problem doing a certain amount of time there. And the use of a sauna and the different classes they usually have is often what entices me to visit regularly. Sometimes when I am based in one place for a while, I will join a gym on a monthly basis. But what do you do if you are travelling?
I recently found out about one cool concept if you are travelling in Australia. It is with Fitness First which is a large flashy gym chain in Australia. They have a different type of membership which gives you access to all of their “passport” gyms across the country. I had a look at the map… they are in every major city.
I wish I had known about this when I was travelling around Australia. Because that was when Dan and I were first dating so I was more concerned with looking good. Now we are married…. so you know…. a little less concerned… but you know how it is. 😀
