This is not an exhaustive itinerary. This is our itinerary. We had limited time to visit Macedonia, so we picked the very top spots that were easy to reach by public transportation and we spent the majority of our 5 days there. This is in no way an exhaustive itinerary, and I highly recommend you spent more than 5 days in this beautiful little Balkan country, and then come back to this article and post your amazing Macedonian finds in the comments!
How to See the Best of Macedonia – Travel Itinerary
Whether you are visiting for a weekend, a week, or more, there is plenty in Macedonia to keep you busy.
48 Hours in Macedonia
If you only have 48 hours in Macedonia then you will only be able to spend them in one spot. If you are arriving by plane then you will have two options as to where you want to base yourself; Skopje or Ohrid. If you are arriving by train then your only option will be Skopje as Ohrid does not has a train station.
Skopje and Ohrid could not be more different from each other. Skopje is a forward looking capitol city with grand public buildings, a bustling old quarter and a whole lot of strange and imposing statues of illustrious figures from Macedonia’s past. Ohrid is a quiet an peaceful lake side resort town, a popular destination for local and foreign tourists, and home to some of the most beautiful churches in Macedonia.

5 days in Macedonia
This is how much time we spent in Macedonia. In our 48 hour itinerary I told you to chose either Skopje or Ohrid and spend all your time there. Well with the 5 day itinerary you don’t need to make a choice, you can spend time in both spots.
Depending on where you are coming from, you will most likely start your journey in Skopje. This strange little capitol city juxtaposes modern kitsch on one side of the river with a historic old quarter on the other side. It’s an interesting city and is a great place to introduce yourself to Macedonian food, history, and culture. Read more in our Skopje guide. We recommend spending at least two days in Skopje.
Your next stop will be Ohrid. You can get here either by self driving or by taking a bus, but no trains run to Ohrid. Ohrid is a pleasant little lakeside resort town. It features a beautiful medieval town centre with an imposing fortress and some of the most beautiful Byzantines churches and icons in the region. We recommend spending 2 – 3 days in Ohrid, and you can read more in our Ohrid guide here.
More days in Macedonia
We only had 5 days in Macedonia, so Skopje and Ohrid were the only places we visited. However, the more I read about other spots in Macedonia, the more I want to go back and explore some more. If you have more time, then awesome! Explore and please come back and let us know your favourite spots in the comments!
