Fast Food In New Zealand
When you are travelling, you must always strive to try several of the local dishes. It is a travel must! And for those of us who love our junk food, then you will LOVE New Zealand. The national dishes ARE junk food. So here is my list of my favourite fast foods in New Zealand...
This burger chain has really gotten it right. With dozens of burger choices (there are even three different veggie burger options!) and some weird but good drink options (lime milkshake anyone?) there is something here for everyone. Unlike your standard burger joint, these burgers come loaded with ingredients. Ingredients that actually resemble food…..! You are almost able to talk yourself into thinking that you are eating healthily. The burgers here even come with their own special utensil. The doofer. The doofer is a cardboard contraption which aids the user in burger eating.
2) Kumara Chips
When you order your burgerfuel, don’t forget to order some kumara chips as well. Kumara chips, which are thick cut fries made from the sweet potatoe (which is called a kumara down here) are simply AMAZING! Also don’t forget the aioli to dip them in. Ketchup is just not classy enough for kumara chips.
3) McDonald’s Pavlova
Pavlova is the kiwi national dessert. It is also the Australian dessert. New Zealand and Australia have been engaged in debate about who gets to claim this as their own for years – but now apparently, McDonald’s has decided the winner. A “kiwi pavlova” (I put quotations marks around that because their pavlova does not closely resemble a real one…but I digress) is now available on McDonald’s new kiwi menu. So, it’s official. Pavlova belongs to New Zealand.
4) Hells Pizza
I love pizza. It’s the ultimate comfort food for me. I MUST have pizza before AND after any multi day hike, long flight, long bus ride….. basically after anything even mildly strenuous. So, being someone who has consumed as much pizza as I have, I would like to consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur. That being said, I can say without a doubt that Hell’s pizza is possibly the best pizza in the world (sorry Italy) Like burgerfuel, Hell’s pizza offers dozens of pizzas with varying levels of inspired toppings. Chicken, camembert, and cranberry sauce pizza? Yup, they have it. Or how about the “underworld” pizza – smoked mussels, calamari, shrimps, garlic, and lemon pepper! They even have dessert pizzas……
5) Meat Pies
Last, but not least – the New Zealand fast food classic. Meat pies are available in a variety of gourmet flavours. Choices range from mince and cheese, steak and cheese, mince and double cheese, chicken and cheese, and even bacon and egg for those wanting a pie with breakfast flair. But really, as long as you eat it piping hot, with tomato sauce you can’t go wrong. Meat pies are best enjoyed from a petrol station, or dairy (convenience store).
