I don’t know why Dan loves fishing so much – he never catches anything. Until the Maldives that is. The Maldives turned Dan from that guy who catches nothing but seaweed, into a proper fisherman (almost).
If you are really serious about your fishing, you might want to bring your own gear. However, most hotels will have some you can rent. And many hotels, like ours, Jupiter Sunrise Lodge, have fishing excursions as part of the accommodation package.
Our first introduction to fishing was where we least expected it – on a ferry! The ferry operators between Male and Viligili threw out trawling lines behind the boat as they journeyed back and forth between the two islands. Simply genius! We didn’t see them catch anything on our commutes, but not catching anything is Dan’s fishing style.
It wasn’t until our time with Jupiter Sunrise Lodge on the island of Keyodhoo that the fishing adventure really started. If you saw our recent review on Jupiter Sunrise, you will know that daily excursions are a part of their accommodation package. Every day we went out with the crew to a different snorkeling spot or to sand bar islands, they would trawl for fish using little wooden floats. We never went home empty handed. The most common fish we caught were Tuna, but we also caught Rainbow fish and Bonito.
The trawling itself was exciting enough for Dan, but there was more to come. The fish that we were catching from the trawling were 10 times bigger than any Dan has ever caught before. But amazingly, these fish were only the bait for what he would be targeting in the evening.
When the sun began to hang low in the sky, Dan and the Jupiter Sunrise crew got ready for their night fish excursion. Back in Australia Dan uses all the latest and most expensive gear he can find – although it doesn’t help him much. In the Maldives he didn’t need a fancy rod and top of the line reel, instead they used fishing line wound around an old plastic bottle. And with that simplistic gear, Dan caught the most, and the biggest fish, he has ever caught in his life.
They spent about two and a half hours out on the water, and when they returned Dan rushed back to the guesthouse to grab me to come and see their haul. Between Dan and the three crew, they had caught over 40 huge red snappers! Dan was on a high as he told me just how easy it was – he didn’t even have all the fishing line wound out before he would have another fish on the line.
Morning trawling, and night time deep sea fishing is included in the excursions that Jupiter Sunrise offer all their guests. But for serious fishermen, they also offer all day fishing trips as well as all night fishing. These specialized fishing excursions will take serious anglers out and will allow you to target a wider range of fish. Jupiter Sunrise is also renowned for being a great place for big game fishing – catching a giant sail fish is not uncommon!
