If you want to get away from the cities, explore some of the countryside, and see some really unique and beautiful rock formations, then you need to head north to the Bulgarian province of Vidin.
Why Visit Belogradchik?
When we were planning our road trip around Bulgaria, we wanted to try to visit every corner of the country. A quick google image search of the north western corner of Bulgaria revealed some pretty incredible looking rock formations. We were hooked.
How to get to Belogradchik
We drove ourselves to Belogradchik and in my opinion, renting a car is one of the best ways to see Bulgaria. Well maintained roads, and law abiding citizens, make driving in Bulgaria a breeze when compared to some of it’s neighbours.
Bulgaria is also really easy to navigate by public transportation. There is a daily bus which runs from Sofia to Belogradchik which takes about 4 hours each way.
What to do and see in Belogradchik
The Belogradchik Rocks – The rocks are Bulgaria’s most spectacular rock formations, and cover an area of around 90 sq. km. Some of the best views of the rocks are from the main square, the top of the fortress, the town park or along one of the many hiking trails. Our favourite spot to view the rocks was from the top of the fortress.
The Belogradchik Fortress – The Fortress, built by the Romans in the 1st – 3rd century isn’t a whole lot to look at. Much of the fortress is in ruins, but it’s one of the best places to see the rocks in town. You can easily see why the Romans chose this spot to build their fortress. The rocks themselves provide some of the greatest natural fortifications available.
