Montreal is one of those iconic Canadian cities that are on most peoples list to visit. It’s also a great city to visit regardless of the season. Most winter visitors to Canada stick to the popular ski fields and national parks, but there is something to be said for the beauty of a Canadian city when it is covered in snow.
Below is a list of some of the great activities that can be experienced in Montreal, and which are only available in the winter.
Fete des Neige
Fete des Neige is held in late January of each year in Parc Jean-Drapeau. The festival features a wide range of both free and paid admission activities such as tubing, ice hockey, and zip lining. There is even dog sledding and sleigh rides available. This is a great festival to get the kids involved if you are travelling as a family, or just to have fun with some friends in the outdoors.
Winter activities at Mont Royal
Mont Royal is one of Montreal’s largest green spaces and offers activities all year round.. During the winter months they offer a variety of outdoor activities to help keep you active during the colder months. There is skating, inner tubing, cross country skiing, and even snow showing. They even offer workshops in these activities, for both children and adults, although you will need to register in advance.
Skating at the Atrium
The Atrium promotes itself as the cities liveliest skating rink. The Atrium is actually open all year round, for those who visit in summer but who still want a little taste of winter fun. The Atrium also offers a variety of classes and workshops for all ages. General admission is only $7 and skate rental only $6.50, it is a great budget travel activity as well.
Salon des Metiers D’art
The Salon des Metiers D’art is held every December for a three week time period at Place Bonaventure Exhibition Hall. Over 400 different artisans gather to exhibit and sell their handmade and original crafts and art work. Admission is free and it is a great place to meet some local grass roots artists and maybe even pick up the perfect Christmas gift or souvenier.
Watch a Hockey Game
No trip to Canada would be complete without going to a hockey game. Even if you are not a sports fanatic, the game of hockey is one of the more entertaining of the sports to watch. It is fast paced, aggressive, and lively – in fact, it can be just as amusing to people watch at hockey games as it is to watch the actual game. The national team in Montreal is the Montreal Canadiens. Hockey games take place regularly from December through to April, so check out the website if you are interested in buying tickets to a game.
