Surfers Paradise – Not Your Typical Beach Holiday
I didn’t really know what to expect when we went to Surfers Paradise. We had spent the day further South down the coast, and Surfer’s seemed like a good half way point to spend the evening. I didn’t know much about it, all I knew is that it seemed to be a popular destination with your average backpacker.
Now I am probably not your average backpacker. I am a morning person, and despite what my recent Brisbane activities would lead you to believe, I also like to go to bed early. I also, really, really, do not like theme parks.
Surfers paradise and the gold coast is famous for the many theme parks that are located in this area. Dream world, movie world, water world…etc…etc… but this post will not be about them. Because I refused to go.
Don’t come to Surfers Paradise if you want to relax!
The city stretches out along the long coast line. The beach here is extremely clean and well kept for one so close to a city centre. But dont try to come here for a nap, or a read of your favourite book. It isn’t called Surfers Paradise for nothing! On top of all the activity out on the waves, the beach was also a hub of activity. Dozens of beach volley balls courts were set up and teams were playing each other in a tournament.
It was an overcast day, so we decided to leave the beach and explore the town. And well, let’s face it, I can only be surrounded by hundreds of girls who are skinnier, tanner, and more athletic than me for so long.
Glitz, glitter and hype in Surfers Paradise!
Surfers Paradise, like a beauty queen, takes no efforts to be modest. The wide streets, lined with high rise tourist resorts and hotels attest to the strong tourist economy in this region. Novelty attractions such as a flight simulator, optical illusion house, and Ripleys believe it or not are just as common as cafe’s and shops.
Despite all these things not interesting me in the slightest (believe it or not Mr. Ripley, but I’m not parting with my 20$ that easily!), the atmosphere of the city was buzzing with excitement. I couldn’t help but to catch the fever a little bit!
Surfers Paradise has one thing in common with Brisbane. A giant ferris wheel. Although the one at Surfers Paradise outdoes Brisbane in glitz and glitter. I spent quite a while amusing myself taking photos of it in the night sky.
It may not be for me, but it might be for you!
Despite actually quite enjoying my weekend in Surfers Paradise, I don’t think it would rank as a destination high up on my list. I am the type of traveller that likes nature, culture, and learning experiences. However, the fast pace and excitement of the city definitely did pick up my spirits and kept me out in the street well into the night.
Surfers Paradise might be a great destination for you if ….
- You are into surfing, or you are keen to learn from the experts
- You have a stronger stomach than me, and enjoy theme parks
- You want to be surrounded by really, really fit people
- You are looking for a destination with a lot of night life and excitement
