Great Ocean Road Tips
The Great Ocean Road is well known as one of Australia’s most famous and most scenic coastal drives. Stretching along the coast between Melbourne and Adelaide, the Great Ocean Road has no shortage of scenic view points and activities along the way.
The following list of tips will help you make the most out of your Great Ocean Road trip in Australia.
Tip 1 : Book Your Accommodation In Advance
Being one of Australia’s most popular road trips, also makes the towns along the way some of the busiest in terms of accommodation. Now, it’s to be noted that most of these towns are very small, and accommodation options are limited. To avoid disappointment, book in advance.
We drove the Great Ocean Road in May, which is the off season. Due to the colder weather, we decided not to sleep in our Spaceship Campervan. Instead we opted for hostels. Even so, many of the places we tried to stop at were fully booked. Also, please remember that overnight parking in many places in banned, and if you do choose to sleep in your campervan, you must do so at a designated camping area.
Tip 2 : Plan Your Stops
There are many great stops along the Great Ocean Road. You probably already know about the 12 Apostles, but there is much more than just them. In fact, you might be surprised at just how many stops you will want to make along the journey.
By planning in advance where you want to stop, you can ensure you have enough time to see everything you set out to. Which brings us to our next tip….
Tip 3 : Give Yourself Extra Time
Even with the best laid plan, you may find yourself wanting to stop at even more places. Or perhaps you would like to spend more time at a place than you originally thought you would. By giving yourself extra time you can ensure you get to see everything you want to, while minimizing night time driving.
Tip 4 : Early Mornings Are Key
Some stops, no matter what season you visit, will always be crowded with other people. By being at certain stops early in the morning, you not only get to capitalize on some amazing sun rises, but you can also avoid the bulk of the tourists who will come by tourist bus later in the day.
We spent one of our nights in the town of Port Campbell, so that we would be near the 12 Apostles. This way we got to spend sun rise there. We were the only people at the look out!
Tip 5 : Take Plenty Of Snacks
With so much natural beauty, there is almost no time for restaurants and rest stops along the way. Our Spaceship campervan came with a pull out table, and gas cooker allowing us to cook ourselves some meals while enjoying the scenic lookouts and beautiful beaches. Stops in town were not required, as we stocked up on all our supplies each night previous.
But just remember – enjoy yourself! You are in one of the most beautiful places in the world!
