ACT Tourism and Visit Canberra created one of Australia’s largest and most progressive social media travel campaigns ever seen. Over a weekend in October 2012 and February 2013 they invited 500 of the countries most influential people on twitter, facebook, instagram and the web to come to Canberra and share with their followers just how much this city has to offer.
Canberra has recently had a bad reputation as a “boring” tourist destination, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The campaign had four streams; Arts and Culture, Family Fun, Food and Wine, and Adventure.
I was specially invited to participate as a member of the media, and was put on a VIP tour in the Arts and Culture stream. Our experiences included a hot air balloon ride over the city, special tours of the National Museum of Australia and National Film and Sound Archive, a glass making workshop at the Canberra glassworks, and an overload of great culinary experiences.
