Things To Do In Wellington
My post on what to do in Wellington in winter was such a hit, that I decided to write one for summer as well. Everyone loves Summer, the days are longer, you can ditch the heavy clothes and just kick back! Summer in Wellington is no different and as we approach it (in the southern hemisphere all the seasons are flipped!) you may want to consult this handy top 5 list for things to do in the sunshine in Wellington!
Wellington is home to Zealandia a huge wildlife reserve that is located within the city limits! Zealandia is home to all sorts of strange creatures that call New Zealand home including the iconic Kiwi and the ironic Tuatara (its not really ironic). This makes for a perfect day out in the wild without all the hassle of actually going to the wild!
Wellington has an amazing waterfront. You can catch ferries from it, hire Kayaks, go swimming and even go for a little row at the rowing club. There are some ace little cafes and restaurants overlooking it. It is also one of the few places where you can get free internet!
Wellingtons zoo is marketed as ‘the best little zoo in the world’ and they are right, its amazing! With over 100 different species this zoo packs a punch. Every day they have a Kiwi encounter where you can see a Kiwi close up. You can also touch a Tuatara (strange lizard) and, if you want to pay a little extra, you have the oppertunity to feed the giraffes!
4. Somes Island.
This is a terrific Island that used to be used as a quarantine for farm animals. Now its a nature reserve (with some genuinely creepy vet buildings). It was also the home of a Leper who lived in a cave, I guess when you think about it that’s kind of sad though.
5. The Botanical Gardens.
Sort of like a park but with lots of different types of plants. The botanical Gardens are very easy to get to via the cable car (Wellingtons tourist board will have you believe that the cable car is a tourist attraction…..Its not. Its public transport…..Slow public transport!). The Botanical Gardens are a great place to go for a picnic to laze away the long summer afternoons!
